Large groupers are seen on most dives and we also saw some of the largest humphead fish we have seen in years. Turtles are abundant, manta rays are common and eagle rays are regularly spotted.

Komodo is part of the Komodo National Park, located in central Indonesia, between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores.
The Komodo National Park includes:
-
The three main islands: Komodo, Rinca, and Padar
-
Numerous smaller islands and a large marine area
Flores Island lies east of the park and belongs to the Indonesian province of Nusa Tenggara Timur.
Main starting point for tours: the port town of Labuan Bajo (West Flores)
Population
Flores has around 2 million inhabitants; Komodo itself is sparsely populated.
Ethnically diverse: predominantly Melanesian-Malay-Polynesian.
Many residents live in rural communities, often relying on the sea.
Languages: Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) + various local languages (e.g., Manggarai on Flores)
Religions
Predominantly Roman Catholic (unusual for Indonesia, which is mostly Muslim)
Smaller groups: Muslims, Protestants, and followers of traditional nature religions
Economic situation
The region is among the less economically developed areas of Indonesia.
Many live from subsistence farming, fishing, and small-scale trade.
Tourism, especially around Komodo, is growing rapidly – bringing opportunities but also social and ecological challenges.
Importance of Komodo/Flores for Indonesia
Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 1991) and internationally renowned for:
-
Komodo dragons
Pristine coral reefs
High marine biodiversity
Today, the region is one of Indonesia’s most important nature tourism destinations outside Bali.
Labuan Bajo is being promoted by the government as an emerging "Super Priority Destination".
Economic impact of the dive industry
Komodo is one of the world's top diving destinations, known for:
-
Strong currents and biodiverse reefs
Large pelagic sightings (mantas, sharks, tuna)
Colorful coral landscapes and macro life
Liveaboards (dive boats with overnight accommodation) are a core part of the dive tourism model.
Local communities benefit increasingly through:
-
Jobs in dive centers, boat crews, accommodation, restaurants
Sale of local products (e.g., crafts, fish)
However, there are also challenges:
-
Access to protected areas
Pressure from mass tourism
Environmental risks from irresponsible boating or waste
Why Komodo/Flores is a popular destination for divers
-
World-class dive sites with strong currents and big marine life
Mantas at sites like Manta Point
Macro life (nudibranchs, pygmy seahorses, frogfish)
Diverse topography: walls, channels, reef tops, caves
UNESCO status = high environmental protection standards
Adventurous atmosphere, often combined with hikes to see Komodo dragons
Great value compared to other world-class dive spots
Liveaboard experience allows access to remote, rarely dived sites
