Cocos Island (Isla del Coco) is located in the eastern Pacific Ocean, around 550 kilometres southwest of Costa Rica. It belongs to Costa Rica and is an uninhabited tropical island that is primarily known for its breathtaking underwater world and its importance as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Geographical location

Cocos Island is located in the Pacific-Caribbean region, but is not part of the Caribbean, but of the Eastern Pacific. The island is a long way from the mainland, about 36 hours by boat from Costa Rica. It is of volcanic origin and has an area of 24 square kilometres.

Climate

The climate on the island is tropical and humid, with heavy rainfall throughout the year. Temperatures average between 23 and 30°C. Due to its proximity to the equatorial weather corridor, the climate is strongly influenced by the Pacific Ocean, resulting in lush vegetation and numerous waterfalls.

Inhabitants & living conditions

Cocos Island has no permanent population. The only inhabitants are park rangers and occasional researchers who monitor and protect the Cocos Island National Park. There is no infrastructure for tourists, and visits are only possible with a special permit or on diving safaris.

Economy

As the island is uninhabited, there is no traditional economy. The main purpose of the island is nature conservation and it is part of the Cocos Island National Park. Economic income comes mainly from ecotourism, especially from liveaboards departing from Costa Rica.

Religion

As there is no permanent population, there are no religious institutions on the island. However, Costa Rica is predominantly Catholic.

Position in the region

Cocos Island is one of the most important nature reserves in the eastern Pacific. It is known for its impressive biodiversity and is often compared to the Galápagos Islands. It is particularly famous among divers, as large schools of hammerhead sharks, manta rays, whale sharks and other large fish can be found there.

Although the island is not located in the Caribbean, it is of great importance for the conservation of marine biodiversity and is one of the most spectacular diving spots in the world.
