The Lembeh Strait is an approximately 14 km long, only 0.7 km wide strait between the north-east coast of Sulawesi and Lembeh Island in the Indonesian North Sulawesi. It is located at approximately 1°26′59″ N / 125°13′18.5″ E and falls under the administrative jurisdiction of the harbour town of Bitung on the mainland
Population
Lembeh Island is divided into 17 small villages ("desa"), which are mainly distributed along the coast. On the mainland side, the town of Bitung with around 200,000 inhabitants is the economic centre and springboard for travellers to the strait
Religions
The inhabitants of Lembeh Island are roughly equally divided between Christians and Muslims. Minahasa churchesand mosques characterise the townscape of the island
Significance for the region
- Shipping & fishing: The narrow, protected strait serves as an important transport route and fishing ground for the local population.
- Economy: In addition to (coconut and spice) farming on Lembeh, diving tourism contributes significantly to the region's income.
Activities apart from diving
- Cultural villages: Guided tours through the 17 villages provide insights into traditional Minahasa architecture, handicrafts and daily island life (e.g. coconut and spice plantations)
- Tangkoko Nature Reserve: Just 30 kilometres south of Bitung is the Tangkoko-Batuangus-Dua Saudara nature reserve with over 8,700 hectares of rainforest. Here you can observe black macaques, tarsiers, maleo birdsand knobbed thrushes; hikes on the gentle slopes of Mt Dua Saudara are a must.
- Snorkelling & kayaking: Shallow coral gardens on the shores of the strait allow even non-divers colourful insights into underwater life. Kayak tours through mangrove arms are also popular
