Geographical location
The island of Komodo and the larger neighbouring island of Flores are located in the Indonesian archipelago between Bali and Timor. They belong to the province of East Nusa Tenggara and are part of the so-called Sunda Archipelago. Komodo is best known for the Komodo National Park, which extends over several islands and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Flores lies to the east of Komodo and stretches around 350 kilometres in length.
Population & religion
Only a few people live on Komodo, as a large part of the island is designated as a protected area. The inhabitants are mostly fishermen or work in tourism.
Flores has around 1.8 million inhabitants. The population is ethnically diverse, with different indigenous groups and languages. The majority of the people belong to the Catholic faith, which makes Flores one of the few predominantly Christian regions in Indonesia.
Diving in Komodo
The Komodo National Park is one of the best diving areas in the world. Strong currents bring nutrient-rich water that creates an incredible marine biodiversity. Here you can see manta rays, sharks, barracudas, napoleons, turtles and huge schools of fish. There are also beautiful coral reefs, drop-offs and underwater caves.
Particularly well-known dive sites are:
-
Batu Bolong - a fish-rich pinnacle with strong currents
-
Manta Point - a hotspot for manta rays
-
Castle Rock & Crystal Rock - encounters with big fish
In addition to diving, the region is also known for its Komodo dragons, which live on the islands of Komodo and Rinca.
Conclusion
Komodo and Flores offer a fascinating mix of breathtaking nature, unique underwater worlds and cultural diversity. Whether you are a diver or an adventurer - this region is an absolute highlight in Indonesia!
